The security of the world’s digital data is critical. Stolen or breached data can result in high recovery costs and sometimes irreparable damage. However, it is not enough for data centres to protect themselves from a cyber-attack; physical security requirements need to be considered as well.
Working with our Singapore partners, BP Systems, Pensher Skytech has installed blast proof doors at one of Asia’s largest data centres in Singapore.
After analysing the requirements and potential threats the data centre faced, blast proof doors were chosen as the physical protection. Pensher Skytech’s blast doors are manufactured from steel and were designed to provide maximum protection should the data centre attempt to be infiltrated. Oxford University suggests that in data centres ‘physical protection should be provided against damage from natural or manmade disasters, such as fire, flood, explosion etc.’
Data centre security is always to the highest level and is regularly checked to ensure that effective procedures are in place to protect areas that contain confidential or sensitive information.
According to SAP Data Centre, doors and windows are inspected annually under strict regulation testing. The TUV (an international safety certification organisation) inspects all access points to the data centre in accordance with ISO 27001 specifications. They also carry out a ‘door effectiveness’ check whereby they leave the door open for one minute to see if the alarm is triggered as per the standard. The doors and windows must also provide 90 minutes of fire resistance, according to the T90 and F90 classifications.
Pensher Skytech designed, manufactured, and installed the blast proof doors to high specifications. The doors will be able to protect from potential blast attacks, as well as ensure the infrastructure is safe and that the doors align with the company’s security procedures.
Derek Quinn, Pensher Skytech’s Technical Manager, said, ‘it is great to export our products oversea; our expertise in blast proof doors is sought after throughout the world. We are always proud to contribute when we can help in making the world a safer place. That has always been the goal when we develop our products’.
